Description
Sterling Silver Chicago Yachting Trophy PLATTER Mackinac - Past Commodor's Trophy - 1961 Made by WALLACE   Have a wonderful piece of Chicago Yachting history with this beautiful and uniquely shaped sterling silver platter. It was made by Wallace. Stamped on the bottom is WALLACE STERLING 4480 and a Wallace sticker. It measures 12 and 1/4" by 8 and 1/2", and as is about 3/4" deep. Weighing in at 20.9 oz. (594 g) was the basis for my starting price, but keep in mind... this is a one-of-a-kind glorious piece of sailing history and its value is in its heritage and uniqueness. The engraving reads: CHICAGO MACKINAC RACE - PAST COMMODORE'S TROPHY - Won By - "TALISMAN" - G. Quandee - 1961 My Father sailed most of his adult life and raced his various sailboats many times. He was also Commodore of Chicago's Jackson Park Yacht Club for a few years. His greatest win was winning the 1964 Mackinac race (the largest fresh water race in the world) overall with the smallest yacht (a Tripp 30). I will be keeping THAT one... :) This sloop and her crew were unbeatable at times! From the SI (Sports Illistrated) magazine archives: BOATING—A record fleet of 114 yachts entered the 333-mile Chicago-to-Mackinac race, and the surprise winner in the overall standings was TALISMAN, a little 30-foot sloop owned and skippered by George A. Quandee of Chicago , with a corrected time of 51 hours 24 minutes 10 seconds. A very long story short, I have numerous trophies that I thought better to be enjoyed by collectors and others interested, than for me to hang on to them. I would like them to be appreciated by others now and her history to live on! I quickly gave it a polish, but I did not polish around the applied flag for fear of it coming off in the process. (NOT for scrap!) Payment is requested within 2 days from end of auction.
