Description
Current Lot 1936 Sparton Peach Mirror Sled Radio - Teague Mirrored radios have always been cherished by Art Deco enthusiasts and vintage radio collectors alike. The devices are combinations of beauty and purpose, making them extremely desirable. The Sparks-Withington Company (Sparton) produced some of the most collectible Art Deco mirrored radios from 1935 to 1939, just after the Great Depression. In 1900, the Withington brothers founded the core of the company in Jackson, Michigan. Captain William Sparks joined the company in 1920 and, in 1922, the name Sparton emerged. In 1935, Sparton produced two mirrored radios, the Bluebird and the Nocturne, and subsequently the models #557 and #558 in 1936 and 1937. This "Sled" or "Sleigh" design by Walter Dorwin Teague, a prominent designer who, at the time, was also commissioned by Eastman Kodak has become one of the great classics of all time in the vintage Art Deco vacuum tube radio genre. Teague worked for Kodak until his death in 1960. His list of designs for major companies of the period is endless! Teague's influence gave Sparton's radios a classic, streamlined appearance. The ebony-lacquered wood base combined with chrome accent "fins" and colored mirrors provided a simple but very modern style. The asymmetrical, geometric shapes and accent designs are distinctively Art Deco in appearance. The Sparton 557 was the first "Sled" model appearing circa 1936. The radio exemplifies a simplistic design with clean, austere lines. This model has three factory original cobalt blue PPG mirrored glass panels. Both radios ( #557 and #558) are analogous in design electronically-five-tube superheterodynes with both broadcast and shortwave tuning. This model is on display in many museums throughout the world including the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.) Model #558 "Deluxe."This extremely rare and desirable peach "sled" is in impeccable cosmetic and working condition. The three rose-colored glass panels display virtually no silvering loss, and the chassis receives broadcasts with exceptional clarity. Comparatively speaking, the ratio of scarcity is about 1 in 25 of its cobalt blue counterpart. A rare opportunity to acquire one of the true gems of the Art Deco period. Measures 18" x 9" x 8-1/4".Please note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, the cost of shipping may be substantial.
