Description
1923 Clapp Eastham Radak R4 and A4 Radio with Horn Description This auction is for a 1923 Clapp Eastham Radak R4 and A4 Radio Combination, with Horn. This is an interesting radio consisting of a Radak Type R-4 1-tube regenerative radio receiver, connected to a very rare Radak Type A-4 2-tube amplifier, and this was at one time connected to the built-in horn speaker. The horn speaker driver is now missing. The Type R-4 is shown in Alan Douglas' 'Radio Manufacturers of the 1920's' Volume 1, page 106, along with a copy of a November 1923 Radio News ad that also mentions the Type A-4 2-stage amplifier. There is no picture of this A-4 amplifier in any publication that I know of. ConditionThis is in as-found condition and needs to be restored. The black front panels appear to be very good with no chips or cracks. There are small remains of a black cloth(?) covering that was once over the speaker. The knobs and vernier dials are original and in good condition. Looking inside, it looks dirty but complete, including the 2 original audio transformers, the rheostats, the tuning coil and variable condenser, the correct tube sockets, etc. The only part that is missing, as far as I can tell, is the speaker driver, and I would suspect a common Baldwin Type C driver would be totally appropriate for the speaker and can easily be found on eBay. The bus bar wiring looks complete and in good condition. The tube sockets need to be cleaned up but generally look OK. There is a bunch of wire jumbled up that I believe connected to batteries. There also is some torn lightweight cardboard stuck on the bottom and sides inside the cabinet that are probably remains from an old paper-covered battery. The wood cabinet is in fair condition and one lid hinge is missing 4 screws, so the lid is loose on that side. The cabinet is nicely made, yet is it somewhat primitive so I believe it was homemade. The lid has a small bit of green paint on it and the whole cabinet could use cleaning or careful refinishing to make it look better. This radio is untested and tubes are not included. It would be a great winter project to fix this up. I know the type A-4 amplifier is extremely rare. MeasurementsAbout 21 x 10 x 10-1/2 inches. Good luck bidding!
