Description
Offered for sale is this fabulous deluxe Victor Model VE9-55E Automatic Electrola /Radiola combination produced by the Victor Talking Machine Company. The gorgeous ornately -carved cabinet made from very desirable walnut wood measures 49 1/2” wide x 50” high x 25” deep, and houses a high end radio/phonograph combination that has an electric motor and is equipped with Victor’s then newest Automatic Record Changer that allows up to 12 records to be loaded, for about an hour’s worth of uninterrupted music. This is an ingenious system in which the selected records are placed on the beautiful wooden record loader, then transferred to the magazine spindle that will lower them one at a time for playing, after each previously played record gets lifted from the turntable by the record lift ring and deposited into the padded record drawer for later removal. There is even a small decorative round shelf built in for the record loader to sit on when not in use. The Radiola Super-Heterodyne has a “loop” antenna concealed inside the back panel and a control to adjust its position, and a power-amplifier unit that supplies all power for operation and greatly increases the volume over that of battery operated Radiolas. The radio operates with 7 “Radiotron” tubes, Model #UX-199. The Radiola was supplied to Victor by Radio Corporation of America. This instrument, which is serial #1945, dates I believe to late 1927 or 1928, and its original retail price was $ 1,550.00. Included with this instrument is its original instruction manual that has a complete wiring diagram, and 5 (of maybe 7) padded program carriers for storage of 10” and 12” records. This wonderful old piece has been with the unsold store stock from an inactive 122 year old family music store that was a big Victor dealership. This unit was used (it has some radio station call letters hand written on the 2 station selector drums), and probably was a trade-in. Condition: The victrola needs some restoration work, and the radio is untried, so we don’t know about it. All of the Radiotrons are there, but one has been out of its place and one of the pins needs to be cleaned off before re-inserting it. They all look darkened like they may be burned out, so maybe it’s time for replacement tubes anyway. Since we have no experience with such things, we’re not going to risk doing damage to the unit by trying it. On the victrola side, for some reason the tone arm with its attached electric pickup is missing, so that will need to be replaced. And the metal piece w/felt top that covers the base of the record lifting ring and guides a played record into the record drawer is present but broken, so that will need replacement as well. The felt on the turntable and on the record lifting ring needs to be replaced as well as the thick gold felt padding in the record drawer. There are some marks and stains on the top of the cabinet from objects having been placed there, and the left door appears to have been pried open when locked as small amounts of wood are missing where broken off. And part of the decorative wood carving is missing on the left door handle, but the pieces are off each side evenly, and we didn’t even notice it until a couple of days ago. We have tried to provide good photos to show these things. The rest of the hand-carved walnut case is in great condition and has its original finish. Also, all dataplates, logos, lettering and knobs and hardware are original and are all present and perfect. The restoration needed to the phonograph is definitely justified due to the overall great condition of this piece. This great old instrument has not been used for about 60 years that I know of so there has been no wear to it in all those years, but please remember that it is 80 years old now and may have other age-related issues that we can’t see. This Electrola/Radiola is being sold as is, and the sale is final. The buyer will need to arrange for pick-up in Akron, Ohio. Please email any questions prior to bidding as this item is being sold as is, and the sale is final. Good luck and happy bidding!
