Description
Hi Everyone, thanks for visiting our auction. Joey has done it again with this really nice radio, you better get them while we are still restoring them – we are writing a book on TransOceanic restoration and only doing these so we can take pictures and remind ourselves what should be in the text; once we finish this book, that’s it, no more radios from us. We are trying to sell down our inventory, I am trying to retire from radios, and we are almost done selling down our inventory, but because of the book, Joey is back on Trans Oceanics; he is the best at it, started it all 10 years ago and has done over 600 so far. He is the one everyone tries to copy, our website www.zenithtransoceanic.com is the standard for “how to”. (nothing for sale on this website, just step by step pics of our typical restoration. But no one else I know of has our experience and range of skills needed to do a perfect job. Please check out our other auctions, too, bookmark us as a seller, we should have T/O’s most every week from now on and for a while and I will listing our parts and unfinished projects, I don’t have time to do anymore. OK, here is a very nice restored Trans Oceanic radio model 500G, 1950 model year, all restored electronically and cosmetically and ready for a new home. The 500G is the rarest of the black Transoceanics, only made for one year, it is a transition from the earlier 8 tube model to the next several generations of 5 and 6 tube models. It is also (to me) the best looking of the black TransOceanics with the big insignia in the wavemagnet. Transoceanics are my teenage son’s specialty and our restored T/O’s are the best available. My son Joey has done a nice job on the cabinet – this is a total restoration, it has been re-upholstered! If you want to see the way we restore including re-upholster, check out www.zenithtransoceanic.com - you may want to take a look, as I said above, nothing for sale on that site so I am not breaking any Ebay rules, just showing some of the steps in our restorations. Luckily, original style black stag Tolex material is still available, using original pieces as patterns, we recover them exactly as original. Joey polished all the brass to bright and shiny, and polished or refinished all the rest of the hardware. This has an excellent plastic face and my teenage son Joey has cleaned and polished to it’s original high luster. Joey has professionally polished all visible plastic surfaces, it is one of his fortes, you have to see one of our sets to see how nice they can be when professionally polished. The dial face is an excellent original, polished bright and clear. Both antennas are there and in excellent condition, the 5 foot high telescoping antenna locks down as it should and releases and telescopes as it should. The chassis has had all the electrolytics replaced with new production parts and all the paper film capacitors have been replaced with modern polyesters. A new Polarized AC cord has been fitted. Of course, the old selenium rectifier has been replaced with a modern one. New dial cords fitted as needed. We even replace the rubber grommets that mount the speaker and the tuning capacitor to the chassis. You can see in the picture how we work, the old parts were desoldered, the new parts are oriented for shortest lead lengths and mechanically connected to the joint before soldering. ( I can’t tell you how sloppy other people are! We install parts and solder per military specs, I have a LOT of years in engineering and design and manufacturing, and it shows!) Beneath those terminal strips are the new electrolytics, diode, AC shunt cap, etc. all rigidly mounted with shortest leads possible, the TransOceanics were very well made, and all our restoration work is the same quality and higher. All the voltages on all the tube pins were measured with a digital meter and any changed value resistors were replaced. OK< a little something special in this set, seeing it was photographed along the way for our book – All the tubes are excellent tested Zeniths! Yep, each tube is an original Zenith tube that was either NOS or little used and test excellent.. All the moving parts have been lubricated and the electronics carefully re-aligned to factory specs. I use a LARGE analog meter to see the changes as I am aligning, and with the large meter I can see the smallest of changes. On any one adjustment it isn’t so important to be perfect, but when I use the large meter and all are perfect it makes a noticeable difference to sensitivity. The radio now works as new – sensitive, selective and loud with good tone. And this radio comes with Original Paperwork – yup, the original manual, schematic and parts list with alignment instructions, all in great condition. The radio has our exact reproduction owner’s tag inside the back. The wavemagnet extension and original suction cups are included as well. This is a nicely restored and excellently performing example of a radio gaining in popularity daily. It doesn’t appear as restored; it appears like new, inside and out! I guarantee it is the finest restoration you have seen or heard of, as I said before no one else has the varied skills, shops, tools and experience to do the job as we do. If you want the best, we won’t be doing these much longer, better get it while you can. Thanks for looking at our auction. Please check out our other auctions, and bookmark us as a seller, we have nice radios every week. I will pack safely using all new packing materials and boxes. Figure $40 packing/shipping/insurance..
