This is an absolutely gorgeous high quality painted March calendar icon with miniatures of all saints with feast days falling on a month of March meticulously represented in high detail beautifully painted and annotated miniatures. This 19 c icon is painted in tempera on the wooden surface with a gilt background. The Moscow school of painting. So called Calendar Icons display the feast days of the saints in chronological order. Known as Synaxaria (monthly) these panels are derived from the miniatures painted in manuscript collections of saints' lives. Sometimes, saints celebrated on the same day are grouped together ; other times only the first of them is represented. Whereas most saints are represented standing, martyrs are depicted at the moment of their martyrdom. Each row represents a separate week of the month for ease of practical use. Measurements: 26.5 cm x 31.7 cm (10 1/2 in x 12 1/2 in ) Unmarked Condition: Superb original condition, minor patina and cosmetic scratches on the surface. Minor restoration on borders.
