This 19 c icon is painted in tempera on the wooden surface with a gilt background. The Ural Mountains school of painting. The feast of the Protecting Veil (Pokrov) owes its origin in Russia to pilgrims who had visited the Constantinopol Church of the Blachernae, where the mantle or veil of the Virgin, a relic brought over from Jerusalem was kept. In this Church, Saint Andrew the Fool, had a vision of Mary between John the Baptist and the saints, spreading her veil over the present. Icons depicting the scene show a church surmounted by domes, representing the Church of the Blachernae. Inside, under an image of Christ Pantokrator, archangels open a veil over the Virgin. Around her are gathered the apostles and Church fathers, led by Peter, Paul, and John the Baptist. Below, the 6th century hymnographer Romanos the Melodist holds the text of his hymn to the Virgin, while Andrew the Fool points out his vision to his disciple Epiphanius. The feast day was established in 1160 by Abdrei Bogoliubskii, grand prince of Vladimir. Measurements: 44.5 cm x 53.7 cm (17 1/2 in x 21 in ) Unmarked Condition: Very original condition.
