Description
VINTAGE DOUBLE SIDED ENAMEL SIGN PUBLIC TELEPHONE >>>---à ½ MILE With Original Hanging Bracket A very nice and original double-sided ENAMEL SIGN indicating the nearby presence of a PUBLIC TELEPHONE. Similar signs would be found in many villages, and very often were just sited above or near the telephone itself, on a building, or fixed to a telegraph pole. This example not only retains the ornate original hanging bracket, it also has the rarely surviving addition of a second sign, a “1/2 MILE” arrow, hanging beneath. Typically such a sign would have been sited at a railway station, or on a main road, and would have directed people towards the village Post Office, where the telephone was usually to be found. It probably dates from before the war, and is definitely not reproduction. Measurements are: Main sign 19” x 12” Arrow sign 15” x 4” Bracket 28” long, 3.75” projection Overall assembly projects 21” from the wall. Overall condition remains very good as you can see. There is a beautiful high gloss to the main sign, the smaller sign is also good but marginally less shiny. Blue colour remains rich and deep. There are some chips and wear to the enamel, but nothing excessive, and the message of the sign is still perfectly clear. The hanging bracket still has a good galvanised finish, and even one of the original fixing pins, but at some time has been trimmed slightly at the top, presumably to gain extra height under an overhang. It should be noted that the main sign wraps round a long steel fixing pin, which in turn is bolted to the bracket, and allows the sign to be angled in the required direction. The pin has now rusted inside the curved end of the sign, and in addition, there is a split in the metal down this edge (adjacent to the white border), probably due to the sign flexing in the wind for many years. Metal is still sound at the top end, but at the bottom there has been an effective repair in the form of a small bolted metal strap which has aged nicely and is now barely noticeable. So despite this, the sign is still perfectly good for display. This is a rare opportunity to get such an attractive pair of signs in such good and complete condition. It’s a great size for display, and very distinctive. This is the perfect addition to a collection for a telephony or railway enthusiast, and a lovely reminder of the days before mobile phones when you needed to take a 10 minute walk to make a call... Buyer will not be disappointed. <<<<Offered with No Reserve!>>>> Buyers note: This is a large and heavy sign, so postage is charged accordingly. Collection is welcome from SW London.
