Art Deco German Siemens W48 Telephone Excellent Condition ANTIQUE GERMAN ART DECO SIEMENS W 48 BAKELITE TELEPHONE WITH VINTAGE. MADE BY HAGENUK, KIEL GERMANY DATES TO 1952. CLOTH COVERED HANDSET CORD AND NEW VINYL MODULAR LINE CORD. NOTE: THIS ITEM WAS RELISTED BECAUSE SOMEONE WHO DID NOT INTEND TO PURCHASE IT, USED THE BUY IT NOW. Click Photo to Enlarge You are bidding on a Siemens black bakelite Mod. w48 Desk telephone with a cloth covered handset cord. This phone was manufactured by the Hagenuk factory in Kiel, Germany in 1952. These phones are getting harder to find these days. This telephone is in good, working condition and has no serious chips scratches or cracks in the bakelite base. The handset is in very good shape as well. The telephone dials out, rings (((((LOUDLY))))), receives calls, makes calls, and is ready to plug into your modular outlet today! This phone's predecessors were Siemens & Halske w36 and w38. The w36 telephone commenced production in 1936-37 and was shortly replaced by the w38. However, due to production interruptions as a result of World War 2, large scale production did not resume until the post-war reconstruction years (approximately 1946 - 1960). This model was manufactured in 1952 and remarkably all but the transmitter capsule parts are dated to 1952. The condensor is dated 11/1952, and the dial is dated September 1952. The w36 and its successors the w38 and w48 were used widely throughout Germany and eventually Austria, and manufactured by various companies under license from Siemens and ubiquitously placed into service by the various post offices between 1936 and the mid 1960's. The w48 was so popular that it was brought back into limited production in the 1990's. This phone was manufacutred by DTF (Deutche Telegraph und Fernsprecher) for use by Deutche Post as a standard subscriber set. Click Photo to Enlarge The interior of this telephone is in excellent condition. The metal baseplate to this phone has virtually no surface rust that I could see. The bells do ring loud and clear. The coils on the ringer are clean and highly functional. The design of this phone is simple, and somewhat futuristic-looking for its time. It also represents one of the last remnants, I think, of Art Deco telephone design before the art became lost in post-modern, post-war "cheaper" designs like the BT Mark I's, Siemens Bros. 500 style (copies of the WE 500 desk set), and etc. Click Photo to Enlarge This telephone's dial is almost entirely constructed of bakelite, with nickel, brass and copper. It works smoothly and flawlessly after decades of service. The factory embossed markings on the inside of the base shell are still visible, clear and crisp just like the day it left the factory in Austria. Click Photo to Enlarge The handset on this phone is unique. The cords for these phones are very hard to replace. They are 4 conductor cords, and parts of the cord go up through the handset to the receiver element and 2 of the conductors go to the transmitter. The cord on this phone was frayed and had to be repaired but works quite well now. Click Photo to Enlarge There are no significant chips or cracks in the base. The bakelite base on this phone shows virtually none of its history and is relatively undamaged save for some minor evidence of prior use. Click Photo to Enlarge The base plate of this telephone is in very good condition. It has virtually no surface rust. The rubber feet are the originals and functional. Click Photo to Enlarge This telephone is absolutely handsome and would make a great addition to your home or office. If you love Art Deco, Machine-Age, or Modern interior designs, this is a wonderful, working piece of functional design art. Please bid early and bid often on my auctions.
