Description
This auction is for a one-of-a-kind, 1940, quite flattering, 4-page, hand-written letter from Mary (& Rex) Collison (Geneva, NY) to Mountfort Mills (NYC). As you probably know, most agree that Mary and Rex Collison were pioneers in Rwanda, ultimately sharing the Baha'i faith with Rwandans in 1953. In this letter, Mary first inquired about Mountfort's health, which was always an issue. She then invited him to leave the city and come and use her and Rex's home as a base from which to engage the region via more intimate, "informal discussions . . . rather than . . . public lectures." She closed with family news re Rex and their girls. This correspondence with Mountfort was more than a decade before she and her husband would find themselves pioneering in Africa! As I sort/read through these materials, I continue to be amazed by the "behind the scenes" work in which Mountfort had a hand (in addition to his very public accomplishments). This letter and stamped/dated envelope are from the library of Mountfort Mills, Harvard graduate (1900), prominent New York attorney (and counsel for the Baha'i National Spiritual Assembly . . . e.g., authoring the original By-Laws), "distinguished and international champion" of the Baha'i Cause (e.g., "Chairman" or "President of the National Spiritual Assembly," host to Abdu'l- Baha, “dearly-beloved friend and fellow-worker” of Shoghi Effendi, etc.), advocate for world peace (e.g., Baha'i, League of Nations, etc.), world traveler, patron of the arts, etc. As pictured, this letter and envelope are in good condition. I am not a dealer, so please do email me with any questions, requests for additional pictures, etc. I am happy to reply. I am listing this great artifact, signed by an early pioneer to Africa to start at less than $25.00 with no reserve and FREE SHIPPING!!! Don't miss this one, as it is obviously the only one I have to sell :o) This will make a wonderful addition to your collection, a GREAT gift for the Baha'i historian/collector on your gift list, etc. International shipping will be calculated upon request and international buyers must use paypal. As always, I am happy to provide insurance or other services, but the choice to request and/or purchase these are yours. Thanks for your interest and happy bidding . . . Powered by eBay Turbo Lister
