Description
ONE OF THE BEST LOOKING SILVER HOTEL PATTERNS I HAVE SEEN -- Here is a very rare 1916 to 1920’s era two piece double side winged Griffin / Lion logo silver plate 5 ½” wide by 2 ¼” tall ramekin - bowl frame and matching underplate from the famous Deshler Hotel that was located in downtown Columbus Ohio. I believe that the ramekin may be from the original order of silver plate for the hotel’s opening in 1916. The Deshler was a beautiful 400-room 12-story hotel built in 1916 and owned by the Louis C. Wallick and Adrian L. Wallick, who also owned the Hotel Cadillac (in New York City) and the Hotel Secor in Toledo. The Deshler was located at the corner of Broad & High Streets and was considered one of the most impressive hotels in the Columbus area. During this era that this pitcher was made and used, people arriving in Columbus to stay at the hotel would have primarily arrived by the Baltimore & Ohio, Norfolk & Western, Cleveland Akron & Columbus, Cleveland Cincinnati Chicago & St. Louis (Big 4), or the Pennsylvania Railroads. The hotel remained a beautiful fixture of downtown for many years. However as time went on, the hotel was demolished in May of 1970. This is one of the best looking patterns I have ever seen on a ramekin. The piece has two logos on it, with one on the front and back that show what are two (2) Griffins mythical bird creatures on each side of the “D” (signifying Deshler) as if they were guarding it. The logo has a striking resemblance to the Winged Lion of St. Mark in Venice. Again, this logo is on the front and back of the bowl / dish. The upper boarder mount is very beautiful along with the flowering horizontal mounts and the vertical pillar type that comprise the side of the frame. The silver frame does not have a manufacture’s mark, but I am going to assume this is most likely Reed & Barton. The frame was also made to have a glass or paper insert (the paper would be like a cup cake holder), but I do not have the insert. The matching underplate is clearly marked on the back “HOTEL DESHLER”, was made by the Reed & Barton Silver Co., has the catalog number of 0162-H and is silver soldered. It has the same pattern outerboarder mount that the ramekin has. Both pieces are not souvenirs; rather, these were actual silver plate serving items that were used in the Hotel’s dining room, restaurant, or for room service. The ramekin is in wonderful condition with only light usage. The underplate does have some silverplate wear in the center and on the back, some minor bending of the outeredge, but still looks wonderful. Both of these pieces would have been used in the hotel’s dining room in connection with the Deshler’s china and glass for actual table service. Both are the heavyweight type Railroad, Steamship, and Lunch Room silver plate. This pair would make a wonderful addition to your Deshler, Cleveland, Hotel, or Silverplate collection and it is ready to display. The pair looks much better than what the digital images shows them as. Buyer to prepay item along with $7.99, which includes shipping, packing, and handling in the United States.
