Exceptional Victor Royal Phonograph--became Victor 1 Rare, late transitional model Start Price USD 899.00 Current Price USD 899.00 Time Left - Bid Count 0 Buy It Now Price USD 1,500.00 Reserve Price - Start Time Wednesday, August 27, 2008 End Time Wednesday, September 03, 2008 Location Los Angeles, California See more about 'Exceptional Victor Royal Phonograph--became Victor 1' Description According to "Looking for the Dog: An Illustrated Guide to Victor Talking Machines"-- "The Royal...was similar in appearance to Eldridge Johnos's first side winding phonograph, the pre-Victor Style C Gramaphone.  In spite of the low price, the cabinet of the Royal was still constructed of fine quarter sawed oak with oxidized metal corner braces.  The single spring motor required winding prior to playing each record, although an early brochure euphemistically stated that it had the power to play "nearly two 7 inch records on each winding". A 16 inch horn was standard.  When equipped with the rigid arm, this machine was referred to by the company as the "Victor 1".  Victor provided a cover plate for the Rigid Arm mounting holes marked "Remove This Plate to Attach Rigid Arm"  Very late examples were issued with a plate marked "Remove This Plate to Attach Taper Arm". As you can see from the pictures this is one of those very late and rare examples.  This machine has been nicely restored with new felt, refurbished Exhibition reproducer, and oak that looks great for an over 100 year old machine.  The black horn seems original with quite a bit of scratches and a few small dents and no decal.  The motor runs smoothly.  This is a unique opportunity to aquire an early example of the style of phonograph immortalized in the Victor "Nipper Dog" logo, and the transition model to the tapering arm which represented the height of the external Victor phonograph design peaking with the very valuable Victor VI model.
