The Russian icon bears a direct resemblance to the Byzantine period icons. Russia inherited Christianity from Byzantium where the Christian religion began to grow in the first centuries after Christ. The term "Icon" stems from the Greek word "eikon" meaning "image". It can be applied to any image of any sacred figure or event which had a specifically devotional function. The icon, which became a religious symbol, entered together with Russian culture together with Christianity from Byzantium . There are several questions that arise with the use of an icon in Russia because it was not originally a Christian country. The devotional and symbolic significance of icons grew out of their role from a Calendral cycle. The liturgical use of an icon began with the entrance to the church, where the suppliants would kiss the icon as well as light candles and pray before it. The majority of the Icons in Russia were made in the 14th, 15th, and 16th century. In the 18th and 19th centuries, with the growth of industries in Russia , the economic growth of the monasteries attracted thousands of pilgrims. During this time there was also a trend to include the realistic nature of the subject being portrayed. This technique came from the west to Russia . It influenced Russian icon painting during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. This period really saw a revampment in the art and decoration of icons in Russia .   Condition - excellent!
