Although made from paper it's not flimsy but thick, varnished paper mache. And the mirror side is a complete mirror covered by the paper mache so helps add to it's sturdyness. makes a great stocking filler - TOTAL BARGAIN! Mithila Arts The Maithili speaking territory of mid eastern Nepal was a highly educated Hindu state some thousands of years ago. At that period of history the country was very rich in arts which is nowadays called the 'MITHILA ARTS'. The art is a kind of traditional painting that reflects the natural environment, tradition and culture of the local people. This kind of traditional Maithili painting can be seen in various places but is dying out and needs to be preserved for future generations.   LOKTA PAPER   This type of paper has been made in Nepal for literally thousands of years and is renouned for it's exceptional durability and special texture. Lokta paper is made from the bark of the 'Daphne Cannabina Papyracea' which grows in the himalayas at altitudes of 2000-3500m.  The tree's fully regenerate in 6 to 8 years (which is fast for a tree!) Plus the bark is collected with environmental awareness.  TOTAL BARGAIN!!! ***Please see my other handmade Nepalese items*** ***plus purchase any item from me at Buy it Now price and receive a free pack of chameli rope incense, it's made from handmade eco-friendly paper and smells of Jasmine :) ..and most importantly this and all my other items are FAIRTRADE.  Below is the philosophy of the company I buy from. They are lovely people, non capitalist, eco friendly & ethical :-)  "Our philosophy: We are mainly concentrate in promotion of Nepalese handmade products to encourage and develop the skill as well as the lifestyle of the people from the hilly and mountainous regions where the raw materials comes from. We are employing as many workers as possible from different society & economic field and offering them benefits such as health-care and education to their children. We believe on fair trade, this is why we are not involved in the capitalist mode of production, which only seeks profits.  All our products are environment friendly and they are never relates with deforestation rather control it. We are manufacturing different products and are maintaining our quality standard in each and every individual product. All of our product is made by the experts of skillful hands and 100% free from child-labor whom we select carefully under our strict supervision". In keeping with their philosophy I've decided to put something back and donate £1 from most listings to the Himalayan Learning Charity http://www.himalayanlearning.org  It means my profit's are MUCH lower but just £20 educates one disadvantaged child for a whole year! Providing clothing including extreme weather protection (they're based in the Himalayas after all!) health care, books and stationary as well as an education This enables them a much better chance in life, "Knowledge is Power" (Francis Bacon) so it's all good! :-)
