This size and quality is generally used in a Tibetan Buddhist Temple. The whole statue is ornately detailed with the best carving of a master craftman. Green Tara represents strength and protection. She is the prajna or female aspect of Buddhahood. She predates Buddhism in Tibet and was originally worshipped by the Bonpo Shamans. When Padmasambava brought Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century, he encountered Goddess worshippers. He incorporated Tara into Buddhism, rather then try to usurp local belief. Tibetan Buddhism is the only Buddhist religion with Tara. This wonderful rendition of Green Tara was handmade in Nepal by a family that has been crafting for centuries. Artisans in the Kathmandu valley have been sculpting these statues since the 7th century and are considered among the best in the world. They start by casting a rough mold of the shape in copper using the 'lost wax' process. From the rough mold intensive chiseling, polishing, and pounding brings out the details. Then, the statue is plated with real gold & silver, the face is delicately painted and it is inlaid with gemstones of lapis, coral and turquoise.
