Bright goldtone GG. The bottom - see photo appears to be leather. I don't know what it is - I don't think it is an ashtray - no cigarette rests. Possibly a desk accesory? Whatever it is, it is rare, unusual and probably vintage. The magnet doesn't stick to it.The condition is very good, some minor surface scratches on the back.
