The circle is a symbol of eternity, heaven and Christ Himself who, according to St. Clement of Alexandria, “is an endless circle where all powers converge”.  Figure five is a number of fingers forming the sign of cross: the first three represents the Trinity; the other two Christ and His two natures: divine and humane. The even-limbed (Greek) cross composed of circles, according to Holy Fathers, represents Christ and is a sign of His victory as well as the combination of all the Four Corners of the world.  Symbolism of the relic-container’s form is supported by the traditional Orthodox interlacing pattern.  Its complex design composed of crosses and circles displays the interrelation of  the Deity  and  the creation that co-exist  unblendedly and inseparably in the world transformed by God. The Church art never displays the real world that fights against the evil. Rather, it displays eternal life, the kingdom of glory, symbolized by the image of Christ.  An image of the Sudarium on the front side is the most holy of the Christian world (lost in 1204 during the looting of Constantinople by the Crusaders). According to the tradition it was miraculously imprinted on a piece of canvas with which the Lord dried His face after washing. Jesus Christ gave His image to a servant of the king Abgar of Edessa who was ill with leprosy. It was the first miracle of healing worked not by the Lord Himself but by His image. This miracle became a sign of holiness and miraculousness of the Church’s icons.
