SquareTrade © AP6.0 thewiz627 Store Holy Trinity Icon Relic Locket Medal Christ Jesus Gold All of the pieces in this collection depict scenes and images from a rich Christian history. Whether etched into metal and used as jewelry these beautiful images represent the trials and tribulations of the Christian faith and our own struggles and triumphs as Christians. Almost every aspect of these images is symbolic. This locket is made up of pure gold and pure .925 silver . Below is an explanation of some of the most prevalent images and a brief look into the history of this beautiful Christian art. In early times, artists adhered to strict symbolic guidelines. In later times, there was more artistic freedom, although much of the symbolisms remained. Christ, saints and angels all have halos surrounding their heads. Often you will see angels and sometimes John the Baptist with wings because they are messengers of God. Colors used are also symbolic. Gold represents the radiance of Heaven. Red is used to signify divine life. Blue is used as the color of human life. White is especially sacred as the uncreated essence of God and is only used for the resurrection and transfiguration of Christ. Often, these icons will portray Jesus in a red undergarment with a blue outer garment; representing God becoming Human. However, Mary is often seen in blue undergarment with red outer garment; representing a human becoming like God. The doctrine of deification is symbolized by these colors. Letters are also used as symbols. Most religious icons with incorporate the name of the person or event depicted, often in a stylized and decorative manner. Besides being stunning works of art, religious icons were teaching tools for the illiterate during most of the history of Christianity. Catholics emphasized the role of images as the “Biblia Pauperum”, which means Bible of the Poor. Even those who lacked the ability to read could learn God’s message. The Bible incorporates many references to icons in its text. The first use of an image or icon in the Bible was the creation of man in God’s own image, in Genesis 1:26-27. In Exodus, God commanded that the Israelites not make any graven image. However, soon after, God commanded graven images of cherubim and other like things be made, in statues and woven on tapestries. Also, when Solomon built the first temple, he used imagery, depicting heavenly beings and using cherubim to indirectly indicate God’s presence above the Ark. However, the use of icons was banned in early practice. Later, the Church began to understand that when someone shows veneration toward an image, the intent is to honor the person depicted, not the actual substance of the icon. In the 6th century, certain groups began to develop, and challenged the use of icons. In 726-30 AD, these groups gained Imperial support and became known as Iconoclasts. They destroyed icons in most public places and replaced them with the cross, which was the only icon allowed. Resistance mounted amongst the Iconodules, who argued that icons had always been used by Christians and were an integral part of their faith. At the Seventh Ecumenical Council, held I Nicaea in 787, the Empress supported the Iconodules and icons were allowed to be used as part of Christian tradition. However, because Christians were initially persecuted, early images were arcane and intelligible only to Christians. Some of these early symbols included the dove, fish, symbolic representation of the Four Evangelists, the lamb, monograms, the cross, and the Good Shepherd. Many of these images can still be found in the religious images of today. The dove is a symbol of peace and purity and is often seen with a halo or celestial light. The dove has been known to represent the Holy Spirit. The fish is used as a symbol for Jesus Christ. It is a representation of Jesus’ last supper and water used to baptize. The Four Evangelists are shown as an eagle (John), an ox (Luke), a lion (Mark), and a man (Matthew). The bleeding lamb symbolizes the crucifixion, and more than one lamb can represent Christians. The Chi-Rho monogram, XP, is made of the first two characters of the name ‘Christos’ in Greek. The cross symbolizes Jesus’ crucifixion; however, this image was not used for several centuries, probably because it represented a punishment given to criminals. The figure of the Good Shepherd is an image of the shepherd figures that represent benevolence and philanthropy. Also, this symbol represents Christ’s phrase “I am the shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep” and St. John the Baptist’s description of Christ as “the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sins of the world”. Many of these symbols can be seen in the images and works of religious art today. These beautiful images represent the trials and tribulations of the Christian faith and our own struggles and triumphs as Christians. Hopefully, this look into our rich history brings a new found respect for the images we use to portray our faith. God Bless. This Locket/Relic Container weighs an amazing 36 Grams!
