Humpback Harlequin Arvin Mirror Glass Radio DescriptionHUMPBACK HARLEQUIN ARVIN MIRROR GLASS RADIO1947 MODEL 544I've been collecting and restoring radios for about 7 years now and I've worked with both stained and fused glass for more than 20 years so I combined the two into one and made this Mirrored Glass Cabinet using an Arvin chassis from a damaged bakelite cabinet 1947 Model 544. The cabinet is constructed just like any Tiffany lamp and should last for well over a hundred years with normal care. Cabinet I constructed the cabinet using the classical Tiffany copper foil method of assembling stained glass. I used Spectrum Silvercoats tm glass and used every color that was available. The glass is commonly referred to as water glass and you can see how the glass mimics the gentle ripples you might see when looking at a body of water. Place this radio under a lamp and it sparkles. The base of the cabinet is a piece of mirror glass. Each piece of glass was individually cut and wrapped in silver backed copper foil. I use 60/40 lead to assemble the pieces together. The dial cover is a piece of clear glass. I put some clips on the inside of the cabinet to attach a piece of nos speaker fabric. The chassis is mounted on a piece of wood and is held in the cabinet by a reinforcing bar that I fabricated to hold the chassis in and minimize and movement. It's a different system than before because of the shape of the cabinet and it works very well at holding the chassis in place. I have made a back with and assortment of glass in what I would call a quilt like pattern for the radio out of mirror so it looks impressive from all angles. The back is held on by a couple of hooks on the inside and a zinc reinforcing bar that is soldered to the inside of the back. It slips on and of easily. Knobs are not original to the set and were chosen to compliment the look. I put a piece of felt on the bottom of the cabinet to protect any surface on which it might be placed.Chassis The radio has been serviced recently. Speaker sounds very good. The set plays well. Dial lights and turns freely. Original loop antenna needs to stay on so its attached to the boar that holds the chassis so its attached also. SPECIAL HANDLINGI've reinforced the cabinet as much as possible but there still must be some eextra care needed for the next owner to be aware of. THE SET SHOULD ALWAYS BE MOVED ONLY BY LIFTING THE BASE! !!!!! NEVER LIFT BY THE TOP !!!!! The chassis simply slides into the case and is held in place by a couple of glass stops that are soldered into place on the bottom. They will keep the chassis from sliding in the case. The chassis is bolted securely onto a piece of wood. On the top corners I've added a magnet to hold the back in place. They hold the back on well and care should be taken when removing or moving it as it's a good size piece of mirror. The set is made of glass and glass holds heat pretty well but it's STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to only play the set for limited time and to remove the back for safety when playing longer. Also expect the solder lines to change as it ages and starts getting a darker patina. You can polish it to a bright shine anytime with some 000 steel wool. 11" W x 7 1/2"H x 5 1/2" DShipping weight 17 LBS. SHIPPINGThis radio will be shipped with the chassis and case shipped in individual boxes with plenty of packing material. Because it's relatively small they both will be put in one large box with more packing material. This will be very well packed. I pack radios well. Lots of bubble wrap and peanuts in a good sized box. Due to the fragile nature of this set I add $8.00 for packing materials (already in the shipping calculator at bottom). Use the shipping calculator at the bottom for rates. INSURANCE IS INCLUDED I put a tracking or delivery confirmation number on any item I can. I reserve the option to ship any package by Fed Ex due to size restrictions on larger packages. I refund the difference in shipping charges if it's been Paypal'd. OVERSEAS SHIPPING I've shipped many radios overseas with no problems. Please be aware that the USPS no longer ships by surface rate anymore so it's only AIR that's available now.Countries below are no problem for shipping.
