Description
NUN'S SHADOW BOX of the SACRED HEART A very moving print of the Sacred Heart, from the German Beuronese School. Before the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, it was a common practice for nuns to make their profession by appearing first entering the church in a wedding gown, because they are becoming "brides of Christ" in their consecration. As part of the ceremony, she would remove the wedding dress, have her hair cut, and she would re-emerge clothed in the habit of her order. Here, the image of Christ is framed with tuile, a piece of material from the bridal veil, and flowers from the hair wreath. A very interesting, personal and moving piece and souvenir of a life-changing day. The print has the text "So Sehr Gott die welt Geliebt" under the image, and in small type, "A.M von Oer pinxit" and the printer's name, "B Herder St. Louis MO". The print itself is about 8 1/2" x 6", with a nick in the print on the left arm. The framing of the shadowbox is 17 1/2" x 15 1/2" by 2 1/2" deep. The back of the box is covered with brittle brown paper, with a wire hanger. No international bidders; I pack everything very carefully, but won't ship anything that is made of glass without insurance. Add $3.10 to the shipping cost for this.
