NICHO DESCRIPTION Russian Icon painting became strongly influenced by religious paintings and engravings from both Protestant and Catholic Europe in the 17th century. You are viewing two magnificent antique 19th century Russian Icons, quite possibly 18th century. The first depicts the icon of Christ seated on his throne and the other of St. Nicolas the Miracle Worker. St. Nicholas the Miracle Worker (3rd-4th centuries AD) was bishop of Myra in Lycia, and he was noted for his ardent faith, his works of charity, and his miracles. St. Nicholas was the most worshiped saint in Russia and several members of the Romanov family bore his name. These icons are on wood and gold leaf is used for the halos and background areas. Large Icon measures 13" tall by 15.5" wide, and the Small Icon measures 12" tall by 14" wide. These pieces would be a very VALUABLE addition to any serious collection!
