Description
You are bidding on a relic of St Ubald (also known as Ubaldo) of Gubbio, Italy. This relic consists of a silk zucchetto, or skullcap, that has been worn on the dead saint's head. After dying of a painful illness in 1160, his body remains incorrupt and undecayed to this day, although the flesh is now dark and mummified. St. Ubald was born in approximately 1084 in Gubbio, Italy. He was of noble birth but was orphaned at a young age. He was educated, entered a monastery and was eventually named Bishop of Gubbio. He was known for his piety, poverty, humility and meekness. He was canonized a saint in 1192. The relic is made of dark green silk. On it an oval stamp bears the image of St. Ubald dressed as a bishop as well as his name. Accompanying the relic is the authenticating document dated May 16, 1869 which describes the skullcap. May 16th is the saint's feast day. The document has two signatures as well as an attached embossed seal. The zucchetto relic measures 5" from its top point to a hemmed edge, and its circumference is approximately 20" round. After 139 years the silk fabric has a few small holes (the largest is 1/2" long), especially near the top, as well as some small stained areas. It also has fold marks. The document measures 12.25" by 8.25". It too had been folded and has crease marks as well as tears along some of the folds. It has some minor stains which can be seen in the photos. This is an interesting and authenticated relic associated with an incorruptible Bishop of the Church. Please email with questions.
