Description
Presenting the "Cadillac" of furniture-sized wind-up phonographs, the Victor Victrola Orthophonic, Model 8-4.  Manufactured in the late 20s, this talking machine really blasts out the volume from those vintage 78s.  You won't believe there are no tubes or electronics involved.  The secret to its exceptional fidellity derives from its internal folded horn, an exclusive feature of Victor Orthophonics.  This model is smaller than the Victor credenza, making it a perfect fit for most homes.  It measures 45 inches tall, 29 inches wide, and 25 inches deep.  But it still has a massive, four spring motor, which will run 15 minutes on one winding. The mahoghany-veneered cabinet has the original finish, and is in very good condition.  There is a small piece of veneer (approximately 1-1/4 inches long by 1/4 inch wide) missing from the right rear of the lid, near the edge, but the area beneath it is dark in color, so it is not very noticeable.  Otherwise, the lid has the usual signs of wear, but nothing significant.  A piece of the ball foot on the left rear side is missing (about 1/3).  This does not affect the stability of the machine, and since that area is also dark in color, it will probably not be noticed.  The rest of the cabinet is in very nice shape, including the grill cloth. The phonograph has a gold colored tone arm, with a black reproducer.  This is an original Orthophonic reproducer, with no cracks or loose gaskets.  It is tight and solid, and reproduces the sound loudly and without distortion.  The tone arm support is the original pot metal, which apparently was reinforced with an additional piece of metal at some point.  This work was very well done, and would probably not even be visible to the layman.  It is stable and supports the tone arm well. The gold-toned turntable has the original tan felt, with some light stains, but no holes or gouges.  There is enclosed storage for record albums behind the attractive doors on each side. This is the perfect way to upgrade to the ultimate in acoustic sound reproduction! Buyer must arrange for shipping or pickup from the Baltimore, Maryland area.  Thanks for looking, and good luck.
