THANK YOU! For auction is a Vintage 1939 Wood New York World's Fair RCA Radio, Model 40x56 with a decorative engraved front featuring the Trylon and Perisphere and the RCA Building. The Trylon and the Perisphere became symbols of the 1939 World's Fair, and served as the fairground's focal point. It gave a grand appearance and were very popular among visitors. It's architecture was an example of modern design, sleek, abstract, and symbolic. Many different products were sold in its image, including lamps, bookends, paper weights and radios. Radio Details: Maker: R.C.A. Mfg. Corp., Camden N.J. Model  40X56 5 tubes  Serial Number 531207 Wood cabinet, engraved with RCA building and the Trylon - Perisphere, the modern looking structure designed and built for the Fair.  Speaker cover: Copper Tuning knob Volume control knob Dimensions: 9" x 5.75" x 6"  (W x D x H) This pretty little radio is in very good condition for its age. However, little chip in the wood is noted on the top left corner of the radio, and also the left side of the cabinet is slightly out of line with the top of the radio. Also the knobs and decorations need a gentle cleaning. The cloth cover looks good and the cord has been replaced. It has been turned on and once it warmed up the tubes hummed as expected. I was able to tune into a couple of stations, and believe with an antennae I would have had better reception. This Radio is Sold As Is. Did You Know??? The Trylon which stood 700 feet tall was at the time the world's longest escalator, the Perisphere was a tremendous sphere, 180 feet in diameter. The United States issued a postage stamp in 1939 depicting the Trylon and Perisphere The structures were originally built in Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York, but both structures were subsequently razed and scrapped for use in World War II armaments. It looked like a gigantic golf ball that had fallen off its tee In the 2004 movie Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, the two structures are briefly seen in an arctic region. The Trylon is mentioned in the Groucho Marx song "Lydia the Tattooed Lady" and the Aimee Mann song "Fifty Years After the Fair". Please see pictures for further details.
