The base material for all of their polished brass and silverplate is solid brass. This altar cross is very heavy as you might guess.  The cross alone is 20" in height x 12" width.  The three tiered base is 8" x 5 3/4".  The bottom is covered in crimson felt with a metal markers plate by Sudbury.  This beautiful cross has a few signs of use and age.  The very top centers are lacking lustre in a few spots as shown in the last picture.  The front length of the cross is lacking a little lustre in areas.  Nothing detrimental here, as you can still see yourself in the lustre.  The beautiful IHS symbol has a raised effect with a textured background.   The IHS is a symbolic monogram of Christ used by the Roman Catholic Church. This monogram consists of the Greek letters iota, eta, and sigma, the first three letters of the name Iesous (Greek for Jesus), the letters of which are also used to spell out the phrase "Iesous Hominum Salvator," "Jesus, savior of man." It relates to the story of Constantine, whose vision of the Chi-Rho was recorded by Church Father Eusebius. In the vision, Constantine was reported to have heard a voice proclaim, "In this symbol, thouse shalt conquer."
