Description
U. S. bidders only, please. -- I will NOT ship this lot out of the United States. * * * A Large American Colonial 3-Handled Loving Cup RARE Presented to J. Finley Smith, By Class of 1831 North Presbyterian Sunday School HAMILTON NEW YORK > Silver Gilt Inside John Finley Smith of Hamilton, NY, died in 1843, being Professor of Languages at Hamilton College. His life is usually catalogued in historical Presbyterian records on-line as J. Finley Smith. * * * U. S. bidders only, please. -- I will NOT ship this lot out of the United States. * * * A dominating mantel piece. Presents much larger than measurements would suggest. Hollow applied handles. New York (Cooperstown area) origins? These cups were often engraved a few years (or sometimes several) after smithing. Obviously the work of a talented Colonial silversmith. Stamp marked on bottom as shown below. Holds a little more than 3 pints! A full 7 inches from top of handle to base, 8 inches from one handle outer edge to the other, nearest handle. Opening of 5-inches across at mouth. A few minor dings (one handle has a very shallow dent on outer curve), a couple shallow "thumb like" impressions around rounded bottom, etc. Some age spotting to the copper. Appropriate with age. Spots of black gunk shown in picture rub away quite easily, but I'll leave that to the winning bidder to complete. As an estate item, offered strictly AS IS, but also guaranteed to be exactly as shown and of the age described. Displays well with current patina. Could be polished for luster, if so desired. A very nice piece of early American copper and silver, rare in this form (three large handles, in particular). J. Finely Smith died in 1843. This loving cup was presented to him by the Class of 31. This is clearly 1831. Handles are still well-attached as made. Images are of the actual item you are bidding on. 100% Lifetime guaranteed authentic in every way. Bid with confidence. 3-Day Listing. Don't let the good stuff pass you by! * * * U. S. bidders only, please. -- I will NOT ship this lot out of the United States. * * * SHIPPING: Please add 8.45 for careful packaging and Boxed Priority Mail U.S. addresses. Insurance is extra at cost. Thank you for your bid. In fairness to all bidders, I will not adjust the shipping cost after auction closes. Insurance (if so desired) is $1.70 for $50; and $2.15 for $50-100; $2.60 for $101-200, $4.60 for $201-300, and an additional 95-cents for every hundred after that.
